Hike the mountains to Sörgruvorna, Ramundberget

Sörgruvan nature and mining pits

Take the chairlift Fjällgårdsbanan up to the top of Ramundberget and hike to Sörgruvan, a mine with pits you can climb into. On a clear day, you can enjoy 360-degree views of the mountainscape.

Description of the Route

From the Fjällgårdsbanan chairlift, follow the trail along Kvarnbäckstjärnen Lake. On a clear day, don't forget to look at Helagsfjället to the north! With its 1,797 meters, it's the highest peak south of the Arctic circle. The mountain is home to many different birds, such as Meadow Pipit, Northern Wheatear and Golden Plove. The Redshank can probably heard from some mires, and if you're really lucky, you might spot a Golden Eagle soaring overhead.

Leave the Kvarnbäcksleden path and head towards the Sörgruvorna Mines. Your hike goes through unmarked terrain, and we recommend using a map and a compass. Once you've reached the mines, go below the treeline to find pits you can crawl into - an exciting experience undertaken at your own risk!

For the plant lover, the breaking point between bare and wooded mountain offers a rare and interesting flora. The presence of lime in the soil affects the plants, and right below the mine you can find mountain carnations; a sign of heavy metals in the ground.

If you've had enough, walk back to Ramundberget the same way you came. If you fancy some more exercise, continue onto Ösjödalen.

Length: 7 km round trip

Duration: Around 4 hours
